Three years ago, whilst researching for my book,
“Fremantle,”in England, I located his grave in the Woodvale Cemetery, Brighton, on the South Coast of England. The record shows Arthur James Lyon Fremantle, aged 65 yrs,
interred 29th September 1901 at a cost of one guinea, (£1:1:0d - about $1.60 nowadays). However, the record was ominously marked “Memorial in an unsafe condition, laid flat on grave, December 1935”
Therefore, on 29th September, 2001, exactly one hundred years to the day of the original burial, (and after a lot of work
and effort, both sides of the Atlantic), a new grave now stands on the site, for all to see and visit.

Here is the Brighton Gazetter report, dated 3rd October 1901, of the original burial. Comments between [ ] are mine.
The funeral of the late General Sir Arthur James Lyon Fremantle. G.C.M.G C.B., whose death has already been referred to, took place at the Brighton [Woodvale] Cemetery on Saturday [29th]. The Mourners were
General and Mrs. Julian Hall [nephew], Miss Hall [their daughter], the two misses Fremantle [nieces], Mrs.
Robinson and Mr. Burrough. The cortege was met at the cemetery gate by a large number of gentlemen who had been closely associated with the deceased General, and amongst them were: The Hon.

Mr. C Oldham and Mr. E Trotter. The service was conducted by the Rev. C.A Moull. The coffin, which was enveloped in a Union Jack, bore the inscription: General Sir A.J.Lyon Fremantle, G.C.M.G. C.B., Late
Coldstream Guards. Born November 11th 1835: Died September 25th 1901. The Floral tributes were numerous and beautiful.
